The Elder Scrolls Online Postpones Major Updates Following Significant Staff Cuts: “I Anticipated a Slow Rollout, But This Is Harsh”
The recent layoffs at Xbox have significantly impacted The Elder Scrolls Online, leading to a reduction in the development team at ZeniMax Online Studios, including key leadership roles. While the MMORPG will still receive updates, these cuts have resulted in substantial changes to the previously announced roadmap for new content. Notably, the long-awaited overhaul of the Warden class has been pushed back to 2027, along with several other anticipated features.
In a blog post, game director Nick Giacomini expressed understanding of the disappointment surrounding the delays, stating, “We know it’s disappointing to see some features move out, and believe me, we want to get these into your hands as soon as possible, too. But we believe this is the right move for the long-term health of the game.” Three major updates originally slated for 2026 have now been postponed: the new Crimson Veldt trial, a Class and Combat refresh, and Update 52, which is now set for January 2027 and will introduce a new PvP zone and the Rimegales Skyrim Dynamic Encounters.
Giacomini acknowledged the organizational changes and departures at ZeniMax Online Studios but emphasized that the delays stem from a desire for quality rather than a direct result of the layoffs. “Instead of rushing to hit a previously announced deadline, we are giving our teams the runway they need to do things right,” he noted. He highlighted the complexity of upcoming features like the Class and Combat Refresh and the new Trial, stressing the importance of delivering a polished product.
However, players who were already wary of the MMORPG’s shift to a seasonal model instead of focusing on major expansions are expressing their frustration. One fan remarked, “I expected drip feed but this is brutal,” while another acknowledged the anticipated consequences of the layoffs. A significant concern among players is the stagnation of the game’s meta, with many hoping for a quicker refresh of the Warden class to revitalize gameplay.
Community manager Kevin Gbolie responded, stating, “It is high on the list of things we are actively working on. However, we now need the extra time to make sure we are delivering the quality product you deserve.” He mentioned that the team is exploring the possibility of a smaller class overhaul to assist players in the interim, although nothing has been confirmed. Despite the high-profile cuts, including leadership changes, the team has reassured players that its size remains consistent with when they launched the acclaimed Wrothgar and Summerset expansions.
Additionally, there have been indications that Bethesda will be working more closely with ZeniMax Online on future content for The Elder Scrolls series, including The Elder Scrolls VI, leading to speculation about ZeniMax’s role as a support studio. Giacomini countered this notion, stating, “We’ve had bumps in the road over our 12-year history that we’ve always faced together. As our studio evolves, we are not looking to just ‘maintain’ the game. We are looking to grow it. You, our community, are the reason we have grown over the years, and we want to keep growing with you.”
