The Expanse game increasingly resembles Mass Effect.

The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is set to launch in 2027, as announced by developer Owlcat Games during a recent showcase. The new trailer provided an exciting look at gameplay, showcasing elements that evoke the spirit of a Mass Effect successor. Additionally, players can look forward to a closed beta next month.

The gameplay trailer offered the most comprehensive preview yet, featuring cover-based shooting mechanics and space flight. It also highlighted the infamous “Hybrid” and showcased characters navigating significant locations within The Expanse universe.

Originally announced in 2025, The Expanse: Osiris Reborn draws inspiration from James S.A. Corey’s acclaimed sci-fi novels, which depict a near-future where Earth, Mars, and the asteroid belt’s colonies, known as “Belters,” are embroiled in a political struggle for control of the solar system’s resources. The game is set during the first two and a half seasons of the TV adaptation, and familiar actors from the series will make appearances in some form.

However, players won’t step into the shoes of James Holden or the crew of the Rocinante. Instead, you’ll take on the role of a member of a team of “security specialists”—essentially space paramilitary operatives. The cover-based shooting gameplay, reminiscent of Mass Effect, will have you navigating iconic locations from The Expanse, including Mars, Ceres, and Luna. The story kicks off on Eros station, prior to the infamous Eros Incident, and pits you against “security specialists” from the Protogen company.

The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is expected to release in spring 2027.
