The fifth season of The Witcher has been postponed.
The final season of The Witcher has been quietly pushed back. Initially anticipated for a 2026 release based on previous marketing and filming schedules, Season 5 is now set to debut in 2027, as reported by an outlet.
Filming for the fifth and final season wrapped up in September 2025, just before the fourth season premiered on Netflix in October 2025. Typically, new seasons of The Witcher have been released every other year, making the delay for Season 5 a notable exception.
Seasons 4 and 5 were filmed back-to-back, according to reports. Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich mentioned that the writing team approached these seasons as a single, expansive narrative.
“We knew we had to break it up in terms of how it would be launched on Netflix, but truly it’s the story of this family journey back together. When selecting details from the books, we aim for a diverse range of elements,” Hissrich explained, adding, “Ultimately, it has to be 16 cohesive narrative episodes.”
Season 4 marked a challenging moment for the live-action fantasy series, receiving some of its lowest critical ratings. Additionally, some fans expressed disappointment following the recasting of the lead character, Geralt.
The Witcher first premiered on Netflix in 2019, featuring Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia. The cast also includes Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg, Freya Allan as Ciri, Eamon Farren as Cahir Mawr Dyffryn aep Ceallach (the Black Knight), and Joey Batey as Jaskier. Cavill departed the series in 2022, with Liam Hemsworth stepping in as his replacement. Meanwhile, Cavill is now focused on adapting the Warhammer 40,000 franchise for Prime Video.
Fans of The Witcher can also look forward to CD Projekt Red’s upcoming game, The Witcher 4, which will feature Ciri as the main character and is set to launch a new trilogy of games.
Andrej Sapkowski is patiently waiting for everyone to discover the books.
