The first $1 billion sci-fi blockbuster of 2026 is set to debut on streaming next week.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has taken the box office by storm, raking in an impressive $942 million globally since its debut on April 1. This vibrant and nostalgia-filled sequel to 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie is set to make its home viewing debut on May 19, much to the delight of fans who enjoyed its nods to various Nintendo franchises.
In this fast-paced and whimsical adventure, Mario (voiced by Chris Pratt), Luigi (Charlie Day), and Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) embark on a mission to rescue Princess Rosalina (Brie Larson) from the clutches of Bowser Jr. (Benny Safdie). The film takes viewers through exciting locales, including a koopa amusement park and an underground gambling den, while also exploring themes of family. Peach seeks to uncover her origins, and Bowser Jr. strives to win his father Bowser’s (Jack Black) approval with his villainous schemes. Given its box office success, a sequel seems almost inevitable.
The home release from Nintendo and Illumination will feature an additional hour of content, including interviews with the cast and filmmakers discussing the creation of this cosmic journey. Composer Brian Tyler reveals how he transformed video game music into a cinematic score, while the filmmakers share insights on the power-ups they selected and highlight numerous Easter eggs hidden throughout the film.
Following the digital release, 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray editions will hit shelves on June 16, with the movie expected to stream on NBCUniversal’s Peacock service approximately two months later.
