The Journey of Hytale: From Cancellation to Revival

The adventure game Hytale, reminiscent of Minecraft, has officially launched in early access after a tumultuous journey. Here’s a brief overview of its extensive development, cancellation, and eventual revival, leading to its release on January 13.

What is Hytale?
Hytale is an adventure game that combines the freedom of a sandbox with the dynamics of an RPG. Set in a procedurally generated world, players can explore dungeons and interact with various creatures, all presented in a stylized graphic style similar to Minecraft. The early access version, released on January 13, includes essential systems like exploration, combat, building, minigames, and community-run servers, with plans for future expansions.

Why was Hytale canceled?
Development of Hytale began in 2015 by Hypixel Games, a team comprised of Minecraft players from the Hypixel server, with initial funding from Riot. However, in June 2025, after a decade of development, Riot decided to cancel the project. The team explained that as their vision evolved and the gaming landscape changed, their technical ambitions became increasingly complex. Despite a significant overhaul of the game engine, they felt Hytale was still not progressing as needed. Riot provided generous severance and resources to the developers, who expressed gratitude for the support.

Hytale’s comeback
Typically, a game cancellation signals the end, but Hytale’s story took a different turn. In November 2025, Hypixel announced that Hytale had been rescued. The developer noted that the community’s response to the cancellation prompted them to take action. Although they hadn’t been involved with Hytale since 2020, the game and its community remained important to them. Hypixel struck a deal with Riot to regain control of Hytale, despite the risks involved, and the specifics of the agreement remain undisclosed. They rehired 30 developers, secured funding, and decided to return to the original game engine and vision, backed by a personal funding commitment from co-founder Simon Collins-Laflamme and other core team members, without any external investors.

Celebrating Hytale’s launch
On launch day, Riot issued a statement congratulating the team for bringing Hytale to life after such a long and unusual development process.

Hytale is now available in early access, with the Starter Edition priced at $20. Players will need to use the Hytale Launcher, as the game is not available on Steam or other major digital platforms. Being in early access means players should expect some missing features and bugs. The developers acknowledged that demand has surpassed expectations, which may lead to a bumpy launch week, but they are committed to accommodating everyone.

Since acquiring Hytale in November 2025, Hypixel has worked diligently on a build that was over four years old, merging numerous branches, fixing core systems like camera, movement, combat, crafting, building, audio, and rendering, squashing thousands of bugs, and adding new features. They emphasized that while Hytale is currently “rough and unfinished,” it showcases the game’s potential. Hypixel expressed their excitement about working on the game and hopes players will enjoy it as much as they do.

Looking ahead, Hypixel plans to introduce many more features, including an Adventure Mode with rich storytelling, official minigames, and social elements. They also have plans to bring Hytale to consoles in the future, with a mobile version under consideration. Regarding a potential Steam release, Hypixel acknowledged that while Steam is a valuable platform, they may not necessarily need to launch there.
