The Mandalorian and Grogu Set to Premiere on Disney Plus

The Mandalorian and Grogu have made their mark in theaters, and now they’re set to return to their roots on Disney Plus. On Friday, it was revealed that the streaming release for The Mandalorian and Grogu will kick off in September, coinciding with the start of D23.

Following a digital release in July and an upcoming 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray launch, fans can look forward to streaming the film starting September 2.

This streaming date comes roughly 100 days after the film’s theatrical premiere on May 22, where it grossed $345 million worldwide. While this figure is significantly lower than the $1 billion earned by the last Star Wars film, it still marks a notable return for the franchise.

The critical reception for Mando and Grogu’s cinematic adventure has been mixed, with some positive notes. A review highlighted that Jon Favreau’s film may not resonate with long-time Star Wars enthusiasts, suggesting it aims to attract a new generation of fans.

The review pointed out that Grogu’s charm lies more in his design than in the surrounding lore, a sentiment that echoes the franchise’s history. Favreau seems to understand this dynamic, crafting a film filled with adorable moments featuring Grogu and nods to the franchise’s legacy. While younger viewers may leave satisfied, older fans might still be grappling with the prequel trilogy’s legacy.

Despite some criticisms, the fact that Favreau managed to create a film that feels cohesive is commendable. However, the notion that The Mandalorian and Grogu doesn’t fully embody the essence of a “Star Wars Movie” raises questions about its necessity.

For those eager to own the film, it’s available for digital purchase on platforms like Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV, with a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray release set for August 25. Collectors can also look forward to a SteelBook edition and a “Beskar Collector’s Edition” alongside standard Blu-ray and DVD options.

And for the ultimate Grogu fans, Hasbro is offering a high-end, hyper-realistic animatronic version of Grogu for $599.99. This 1:1 scale collectible is designed for Star Wars enthusiasts, allowing fans to enjoy Grogu’s company at home and even “feed” him.

While some may question the film’s existence, there’s no denying the excitement it brings.
