The Mummy Returns Returns to Theaters for Its 25th Anniversary—With a Twist!

The Mummy is shaking off the sand and making its way back to the big screen. But this isn’t about the latest horror flick from a well-known director or the less-than-stellar Tom Cruise reboot. We’re diving into Stephen Sommers’ 2001 fantasy action-adventure, The Mummy Returns, the sequel to the beloved 1999 classic, The Mummy.

If you’re planning to catch it at AMC, you’re in for a treat: the action-packed sequel is set to hit AMC theaters on March 27 this year.

Taking place seven years after the defeat of Arnold Vosloo’s ancient villain Imhotep, Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are back as Rick O’Connell and Evelyn. Now a married couple with a son, Alex (Freddie Boath), they face new challenges when Alex inadvertently awakens Imhotep. The high priest, understandably upset after his previous defeat, launches another wave of terror against humanity.

Since its debut in 1999, The Mummy franchise has continued to captivate audiences, and with the 25th anniversary of The Mummy Returns approaching, fans will have the chance to see Rick, Evelyn, Alex, and familiar faces like John Hannah as Evelyn’s brother Jonathan, Oded Fehr as the Medjai warrior Ardeth, and Patricia Velasquez as Anck-su-namun back on the big screen. Fun fact: Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson makes his acting debut as The Scorpion King, though you might want to skip his spinoff.

This celebration of The Mummy Returns’ 25th anniversary comes at a perfect time, as a new Mummy 4 is in the works—something fans, along with Brendan Fraser, have eagerly anticipated for years. This upcoming installment is expected to wisely overlook the third film, Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, in favor of fresh adventures.
