The New Clayface Movie Trailer Reveals Even More Disturbing Moments Than Expected
After the adventures of Superman and Supergirl, the DC Universe is taking a bold turn with Clayface. This body horror film is set to hit theaters this October, steering the newly established superhero universe away from traditional heroics and diving into a truly grotesque villain origin story. The initial teaser we saw earlier this year was unsettling, but the latest trailer reveals even more disturbing details, featuring scenes that are already making my skin crawl.
Clayface stars Tom Rhys Harries, known for his role in The Gentlemen, as the titular villain. His character is disfigured by local criminals just as his acting career reaches its peak. In a desperate attempt to regain his Hollywood charm, he seeks the help of a scientist who transforms his body into clay. While this initially seems beneficial, his face begins to melt and loses its perfect form. As the mental strain intensifies, Clayface resorts to desperate measures to fix his deteriorating appearance, including a scene where he appears to use scissors on his amorphous eyelid just to see. Meanwhile, I find myself shutting my laptop and taking a stroll around the neighborhood to shake off the discomfort.
While Superman and Supergirl were relatively safe choices to kick off a new DC cinematic universe, Clayface is certainly a more unconventional selection from studio head James Gunn. The Marvel Cinematic Universe took its time before venturing into more experimental genre films, but with this release scheduled close to Halloween on October 23, even those outside the comic book fandom might be intrigued by a chilling trip to Gotham. Although Supergirl hasn’t performed well at the box office, DC is planning to revisit Superman with the sequel Man of Tomorrow in 2027, alongside movies that will explore other corners of the universe. Before these films arrive, the upcoming Lanterns series on HBO will introduce Hal Jordan and John Stewart into the mix.
