The New Pokémon 30th Anniversary Cards Might Surprise You with Their Charm

Pokémon enthusiasts are buzzing with excitement for the upcoming 30th anniversary set, but there are a couple of concerns on the horizon. First off, the inevitable scalper situation is casting a shadow over this highly anticipated release. Additionally, the introduction of the new card type, Future rare, has sparked mixed reactions. While some players are thrilled about the fresh, chromatic designs, others are not fans of the subdued color palette.

The Pokémon Company has teased fans with a glimpse of the Mew and Mewtwo Future rare cards in a trailer, showcasing their intricate textures. Although the previews were brief and featured animated elements, new footage of someone holding several 30th anniversary cards provides a clearer view of their design.

These clips come from a Reddit user who claims to have early access to the cards set to release on September 16. While it may seem questionable for someone to have cards months before their official launch, it’s not entirely out of the realm of possibility. When the Chaos Rising set dropped in late May, some fans reported receiving packs from the yet-to-be-released Pitch Black set. This suggests that the Pokémon Company prints new sets well in advance of their actual release dates. The complex textures on these cards also align closely with the fingerprint-like patterns seen in the official trailer.

More importantly, the new videos present the controversial cards in a much more appealing light than the promotional materials suggested.

Take the Mewtwo card illustrated by artist Yoshirotten, for instance. At first glance, the rings may appear unexciting, but in motion, they reveal a dynamic quality. The foil’s shine adds depth, making the card’s features pop, especially against the ‘flat’ shading of the legendary Pokémon.

Another video showcases a couple of the Eeveelution cards. The Pokémon Company previously mentioned that the celebratory set would revolve around day and night themes, which is evident in the Espeon card featured in the video. The shiny elements resemble bright sun rays, while the Umbreon card, set against a nighttime backdrop, highlights the fireworks in the distance.

While some may still be critical of the Future rare cards, there’s a consensus that the Pokémon Company should reconsider the ubiquitous Pikachu head that appears on every special set.

There are 14 different products available, each featuring its own promo card and other TCG goodies.
