The next Godzilla movie will make history with a groundbreaking first for the franchise.
After 72 years and 38 films, Godzilla, the iconic King of the Monsters, has etched an indelible legacy in cinematic history, shaping the kaiju genre and transforming sci-fi storytelling. This atomic reptile remains a formidable presence, with nine films released in the past decade, some of which have garnered critical acclaim. The upcoming installment, Godzilla Minus Zero, serves as a direct sequel to Godzilla Minus One, widely regarded as one of the franchise’s finest entries.
This new chapter will push boundaries in a significant way: Godzilla Minus Zero will be the first film in the series to receive an R rating. The Motion Picture Association has recently confirmed this rating, noting the film includes “some violent content/bloody images.” Given the franchise’s history of colossal monsters wreaking havoc, it’s reasonable to assume that the mention of “bloody images” is a key factor in the R rating.
It’s somewhat surprising that the series has never been rated R before. Shin Godzilla delves into unsettling atomic horrors, featuring a tormented, mutated Godzilla at its core. Godzilla Minus One is heavily intertwined with World War II, one of the most brutal conflicts in history, and its immediate aftermath.
Set in 1949, two years after the events of the previous film, Minus Zero will follow several surviving characters. As expected, Godzilla makes a return after appearing to be defeated. While the last film primarily showcased the struggle of “humans versus Godzilla,” this sequel hints at the reintroduction of another legendary monster from the franchise.
Takashi Yamazaki is back to direct and write for Minus Zero. The core team is largely returning, with Kōzō Shibasaki as cinematographer, Ryūji Miyajima handling editing, and Naoki Satō composing the score. The original rights holder is producing the film, marking the 34th entry in the series (with five films produced by American companies). Fans won’t have to wait long for critical reactions: Godzilla Minus Zero is set to premiere at the New York Film Festival on September 26, 2026, followed by its release in Japan on November 3, 2026, and in the U.S. through GKIDS on November 6, 2026.
Details about the plot of this sequel to 2023’s Godzilla Minus One remain scarce.
