The One Piece anime reboot unveils its striking new art style.
Being a One Piece fan can be a challenge if you’re feeling left out. The franchise is a treasure trove of content, offering countless ways to dive into its world. If Netflix’s live-action adaptation isn’t enough and you’ve already devoured the 1,100-plus chapters of the manga, you’re likely eagerly anticipating the anime remake that was announced in December 2023. After a lengthy wait of over two years, Wit Studio has finally unveiled a sneak peek of this fresh take on the Straw Hats’ epic journey.
Produced in collaboration with several studios, this new adaptation, titled The One Piece, will focus on the East Blue Saga from the original manga, utilizing state-of-the-art technology to meet the expectations of today’s audience. So far, we’ve only glimpsed a few still images from the highly anticipated series, but Netflix has now shared a sneak peek showcasing the development of the new anime.
Fans hoping for a teaser featuring actual animation may find themselves a bit let down. The video instead showcases character design sheets and concept art, highlighting the five original Straw Hats—Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, and Sanji—along with Shanks. The closing message, “Get ready to set sail,” hints at an upcoming release, though no specific details have been revealed yet.
The original One Piece anime isn’t going anywhere, either. In fact, it has recently transitioned to a seasonal format to maintain the high quality fans have come to expect. However, revisiting older episodes can be a slog, particularly for newer viewers. Like many shows from its time, the One Piece anime is burdened with filler episodes and inconsistent animation quality, a consequence of its weekly production schedule. Wit Studio’s The One Piece aims to present earlier story arcs without the pacing issues, all while showcasing the stunning visuals the studio is renowned for.
While anticipation for The One Piece continues to build, the lengthy wait and sparse updates have left some fans feeling frustrated. Nonetheless, each small glimpse behind the scenes suggests that the artistry will be exceptional. In contrast to the current anime’s vibrant colors and sharp lines, Wit Studio opts for softer pastel tones and pencil cel-shading effects to bring Eiichiro Oda’s world to life. Here’s hoping for more updates soon, but in the meantime, fans can enjoy the new season of the original One Piece, where the Straw Hats are finally making their way to Elbaph.
