The original creators of the cult classic strategy game RUSE from 2010 are reviving the title, now independent of Ubisoft.

Ubisoft’s classic military strategy game, RUSE, has made its triumphant return to Steam over a decade after being removed from various platforms. This fan-favorite title is now accessible to both players who owned the original PC version and newcomers, complete with all its DLC and enhanced support for Valve’s Steam Deck.

Eugen Systems, the developer, shared the exciting news on Steam, expressing their enthusiasm for reintroducing RUSE to a new generation while welcoming back seasoned players of this iconic World War II real-time strategy game. They highlighted RUSE’s unique focus on deception, strategy, and tactical cunning, setting it apart in the genre.

The developers also shed light on the lengthy gap since RUSE’s original release. They explained that while the game launched in 2010, it didn’t officially belong to them due to distribution issues, which left them unable to assist players or facilitate access in the years that followed. Recently, they regained the rights to RUSE, allowing them to re-release this RTS classic with some exciting new features.

In RUSE, players take on the role of commanders for various WWII factions, including the U.S., France, Germany, Japan, the USSR, Italy, and the U.K. Each faction boasts unique units, play styles, and strategies. A key element of RUSE’s gameplay is the ability to bluff opponents; players can use special RUSE cards to manipulate enemy perceptions, bolster their forces, or gather vital intelligence.

The game is described as a distinctive real-time strategy experience where bluffing becomes a powerful tool for leading your nation to victory. With the exclusive IRISZOOM® engine, players can enjoy an immersive view of the battlefield, from detailed inspections of individual units to a sweeping overview reminiscent of board games.

In RUSE, every encounter is a test of wits and perception. Players can deploy RUSE cards to mislead enemies, camouflage troops, set up decoys, or spy on opponents.

Originally launched in 2010 for PlayStation 3, Windows PC, and Xbox 360, RUSE later expanded to Mac. A nostalgic trailer from its release era even showcased its support for multi-touch surfaces and PlayStation Move controllers, highlighting the innovative features of its time. After being delisted in 2015, RUSE’s online servers were shut down in 2024.

Eugen Systems has since developed other strategy titles, including Act of Aggression and Steel Division: Normandy ’44.

RUSE is now available in its Definitive Edition for Windows PC on Steam for $29.99.
