The original Star Wars film will return to theaters in 2027.
Star Wars is set to make its triumphant return to theaters in 2027, celebrating its 50th anniversary with the original, “newly restored” version. This limited-time screening offers a unique chance to experience the iconic 1977 sci-fi classic as it was originally intended, free from the edits and digital enhancements that have been added over the years.
In August, Lucasfilm revealed plans for the anniversary celebration but kept fans guessing about which version of the film would hit theaters. Now, it’s official: it’s simply Star Wars. Not Star Wars: A New Hope, and not Star Wars: Special Edition—just the original Star Wars.
The film will be back in theaters “everywhere” starting February 19, 2027, according to a post from Lucasfilm.
Since its debut, George Lucas has gained a reputation for revisiting and modifying the original Star Wars trilogy, making significant changes and adding new special effects. For the franchise’s 20th anniversary, Lucasfilm celebrated with a theatrical re-release of the “Special Edition” trilogy, which featured extensive alterations and new scenes created with cutting-edge CGI. Over the next three decades, Lucas continued to tweak Star Wars, leading to the infamous “Maclunkey Cut” available on Disney Plus.
Earlier this year, Kathleen Kennedy from Lucasfilm collaborated with the British Film Institute to showcase what is believed to be the earliest existing print of Star Wars, untouched by any of Lucas’s revisions. The BFI even went the extra mile to prepare the film reels, locating a complete version of the original opening crawl before “A New Hope” was added to the title.
As Lucasfilm hinted at bringing Star Wars back to theaters, fans speculated about which version would be shown. Lucas has previously stated that the original versions “will disappear,” suggesting that, in his view, the unaltered films “[don’t] really exist anymore.” For years, fans who lament the changes made to Star Wars have had to rely on old VHS and Laserdisc copies or fan-made restorations.
Now, however, a new generation of Star Wars enthusiasts will have the opportunity to legally experience the original version of the film.
Lucasfilm will provide more information on ticket sales for the 2027 theatrical release soon. In the meantime, get ready for the excitement with a trailer for Star Wars!
