The Punisher Remains Unaltered as Spider-Man 4 Approaches

Since the announcement of the Punisher’s appearance in the upcoming Spider-Man movie, fans have expressed concerns that Disney might soften the character’s notorious violent nature for the big screen. This worry is understandable, especially considering that Spider-Man: Brand New Day will carry a PG-13 rating, while the Punisher stands as Marvel’s most R-rated hero, alongside Deadpool. However, the recent trailer for Punisher: One Last Kill suggests there’s no need for alarm.

Punisher: One Last Kill is a 60-minute special set to premiere on Disney Plus on May 12th, just after the conclusion of Daredevil: Born Again season 2 and a couple of months before the Punisher makes his return in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

The official trailer released on April 9 showcases the brutal violence fans expect from the character. In under two minutes, the Punisher takes out at least six people and even throws one off a rooftop. This level of intensity mirrors what we saw in his Netflix series and aligns with his portrayal in the first season of Daredevil: Born Again, which was the first time Marvel Studios took the reins, moving away from the now-defunct Marvel Television division.

In the initial trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the Punisher’s first action is to run over Spider-Man with his van and shoot him in the chest. While there’s no blood, it’s a reassuring sign that Disney recognizes the need for the Punisher’s signature brutality—it’s essentially his defining trait.

Jon Bernthal, who portrays the Punisher, addressed this topic in a January interview. Although he kept details vague, he confirmed that the Punisher in Brand New Day remains true to the character seen in One Last Kill. This bodes well for fans who appreciate the anti-hero’s violent escapades in Spidey’s upcoming adventure.

That said, it’s reasonable to expect a slightly different approach, with less emphasis on blood and gore and more strategic cutaways during intense moments. This doesn’t mean the Punisher will be any less brutal; rather, it’s a sensible compromise to allow him to interact with other Marvel heroes.
