The Reasons Behind Uneven Skin Distribution Among Overwatch Heroes
Discussions about which heroes receive the most cosmetics in Overwatch have been around since the game’s launch, and these debates have intensified with the introduction of brand collaborations. It often seems like every crossover features Kiriko, Mercy, or Juno getting new skins, while heroes like Baptiste and Lúcio are left in the dust. The prevailing theory among fans is that Kiriko and Mercy players are more likely to spend money, but according to Blizzard, the situation is more nuanced.
In a recent interview with the art team at Blizzard’s Irvine studio, art director Dion Rogers shared insights into why certain characters tend to get more attention in collaborations. He noted that some heroes are simply easier to envision in different outfits and accessories. However, as the team has honed their skills in adapting external designs for their characters, they aim to give more love to those who have been overlooked, like Lúcio.
“Our team sketches a lot of concepts, and some heroes just lend themselves better to certain designs,” Rogers explained. “I know Lúcio mains are eager for more options. We’ve got some exciting things in the pipeline for him, especially with the recent Hello Kitty crossover. As we improve our processes and approach the milestone of 50 heroes, it becomes a challenge to reach every character. Some heroes are just easier to work with than others.”
He continued, “There are times when a concept doesn’t translate well, and you end up with something that looks off. Some of those ideas even make it into the game. A lot of our discussions revolve around whether a concept truly fits a character or if it ends up looking out of place. But by 2026, you’ll start to see the results of our efforts over the past two years. We’re building a more efficient pipeline, which will allow us to create more content for a wider range of heroes, especially those who feel a bit neglected.”
Character artist Melissa Kelly, a fan of Zarya, expressed her understanding of the frustrations faced by players of underrepresented heroes. While Lúcio is set to receive some attention in the Sanrio crossover, it seems that Kiriko, Juno, and Mercy will also be part of the mix, indicating that some patterns are hard to break.
