The Rise of Prediction Markets: Exploring Platforms Like Polymarket and Kalshi
Prediction markets allow you to wager on a wide array of topics, from the number of tweets Elon Musk will share in a week to who will be the next U.S. president, often yielding predictions that are surprisingly accurate. Polymarket’s CEO Shayne Copland has even stated that these markets represent “the most accurate thing we have as mankind right now.”
However, these platforms create a gray area between gambling and stock trading, raising questions about their function and regulation. As noted by a commentator, “All of the lines between trading, speculating, and gambling are just being completely torn apart.”
Ethical issues are also emerging around prediction markets, particularly regarding the appropriateness of betting on nearly anything and the potential for insider trading. A notable example is a newly created Polymarket account that reportedly made over $400,000 in January by betting on the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.
