The Simpsons is here to stay. After surpassing 800 episodes, showrunner Matt Selman confirmed that Springfield’s beloved family will never have a formal goodbye, even when they eventually leave our screens.

In a conversation, Selman referenced the season 36 premiere ‘Bart’s Birthday’ as a pivotal reason why The Simpsons will avoid a traditional series finale.

In that episode, Bart, just about to celebrate his 11th birthday, witnesses the show’s canon shifting dramatically as it approaches its conclusion.

“We did an episode about a year-and-a-half ago that parodied the series finale. We packed every possible series finale trope into one show, which was my way of saying we’re never going to do a series finale,” Selman explained.

He added, “If the show ever does end, it won’t have a finale; it would just be a regular episode featuring the family, with maybe a few Easter eggs sprinkled in.”

Rest assured, The Simpsons has plenty of stories lined up for years to come. Having just wrapped up season 37, multiple Disney+ specials are on the way this year. Plus, the show has been renewed through its 40th season.

For long-time fans, a sequel to The Simpsons Movie is in the works, though it has been pushed back to September 3, 2027, which is a bummer.
