The Super Mario Galaxy movie surprises fans with a thrilling game reference following Chris Pratt’s promise of more characters.

The new trailer for the Super Mario Galaxy Movie not only gives us our first glimpse of Yoshi but also features a surprising cameo from a lesser-known character that fans might not have anticipated.

At around the 1 minute 35 seconds mark, we catch a quick shot of Birdo, a classic Mario antagonist, launching eggs at Princess Peach, who skillfully evades them with her pink umbrella. But look closely behind her, and you’ll spot Mouser, the boss from The Super Mario Bros. 2 game. Check out the trailer to see if you can catch him!

If you’re a fan of the Super Mario series, you might still be scratching your head about who Mouser is. He made his debut in the 1987 title Super Mario Bros. 2 (which was a reimagining of Doki Doki Panic in the West) as a villain who uses dream bombs to wreak havoc on good dreams. Sporting his punk boots, gloves, and iconic black sunglasses, he looks just like he did in the game.

While it’s unclear what role Mouser will play in the Super Mario Galaxy Movie, his appearance in the casino alongside other bosses hints at some intriguing possibilities. The way he lurks behind Peach raises questions about whether he might switch allegiances. This won’t be Mouser’s first time on screen, as he was a recurring character in the animated Super Mario Bros. Super Show.

We knew more characters were on the horizon, as Chris Pratt, the voice of Mario, hinted at some exciting additions before the release of his new movie Mercy. He mentioned, “I’m not allowed to say what they are, but yes, there are some really incredible ones,” and teased that there are even a couple of surprises not shown in the trailer.

Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, with a screenplay by returning writer Matthew Fogel, the Super Mario Galaxy Movie continues the adventures of Mario and Luigi as they encounter new foes and make new allies. The film brings back Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, while also introducing Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr. and Brie Larson as Rosalina.

Mark your calendars for the Super Mario Galaxy Movie, set to release on April 1.
