The top model of the Nintendo Switch 2 could be available only in Europe.

A new version of the Nintendo Switch 2 is reportedly in development for Europe, featuring a user-replaceable battery. This update aligns with plans to refresh the Joy-Con 2 controllers, which will also include replaceable batteries. These changes are being implemented to comply with the European Union’s Right to Repair Directive, set to take effect in July for member states.

The directive, passed by the European Parliament in April 2024, mandates that manufacturers facilitate repairs and encourages consumers to prolong product lifespans through repair options. It also ensures access to spare parts, tools, and repair information, all part of the EU’s Green Deal initiative aimed at promoting a circular economy through repairs, reuse, and recycling to minimize waste.

According to reports, Nintendo may consider similar updates for the U.S. or Japan if comparable legislation emerges. While some U.S. states have enacted versions of right-to-repair laws, none are as comprehensive as the EU’s directive. Currently, replacing the battery in a Switch 2 console or Joy-Con 2 controllers in the U.S. requires a service request from Nintendo. It’s still uncertain if the new Switch 2 model with a replaceable battery will come with a higher price tag.

Nintendo already offers a region-specific version of the Switch 2, exclusively for Japanese customers, which is locked to the Japanese eShop.

Recently, Nintendo rolled out a significant software update for the Switch 2, introducing a feature called Handheld Boost Mode. This mode enhances the performance of original Switch games when played in handheld mode, making them run as if docked in TV mode, with improved resolution and performance. The update also allows users to save notes about friends on their friends list, simplifies friend invitations through GameChat, modifies loading animations for virtual game cards, and provides detailed storage capacity breakdowns by data type.

With the arrival of Pokémon Pokopia, the Switch 2 finally has a standout title to drive sales, but that’s just the beginning.
