The Upcoming Horizon Game Features a Vibrant Three-Player Co-Op Experience

The next installment in the Horizon series, following Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West, is set to take a bold new direction. Horizon Hunters Gathering is an action-oriented hunting game that can be played solo or cooperatively, featuring a vibrant art style, though a release date has yet to be announced.

On February 5, the creators of Horizon revealed this exciting new entry in the post-apocalyptic world filled with robot dinosaurs. Unlike previous titles where players explored expansive, photorealistic environments as Aloy, Hunters Gathering shifts the focus to a “tactical co-op action game” for up to three players, while still allowing for solo play with NPC companions. The game will be available on both PS5 and PC.

In Horizon Hunters Gathering, players can embark on “challenging and replayable hunts” either alone or with up to two friends. Each player selects a Hunter from a diverse roster, each equipped with unique melee and ranged weapons and abilities. The game also features a “rogue-lite perk system” that allows for character customization during hunts. Between missions, players can gather in a lively social hub to prepare for their next adventure, customize their Hunters, shop for upgrades, and team up for future outings.

Hunters Gathering will include a narrative campaign that introduces “new mysteries, characters, and threats” to the Horizon universe. This story will be fully canon and will receive updates after launch.

Guerrilla Games has announced a playtest scheduled for late February, which will showcase two game modes and provide players with an early look at the game before its full release on PS5 and PC. The game will support crossplay and cross-progression between console and PC. Interested players can sign up for the early beta. The development is still in its early stages, so a release this year remains uncertain.

“On a personal note, this is both an exciting and daunting step for us,” said the game director. “Multiplayer games have always been part of our studio’s DNA, and it’s where I began my own career. Bringing a co-op hunting experience into the Horizon universe is something we’ve envisioned for a long time, and we’re approaching it with care, ambition, and passion. I hope the coming months give you a sense of the scale and complexity of what we’ve been building – or better yet, let you experience it yourself in a playtest.”
