The Witcher 3 Achieves New Sales Record
If you’ve been curious about why a new expansion for The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt is coming out more than ten years after its launch, the answer is simple: the game has officially crossed the milestone of 65 million units sold. This impressive figure places it as the eighth highest-selling video game ever, right behind Terraria and just ahead of the original Super Mario Bros. However, it still has a long way to go to catch Tetris, which boasts an astounding 520 million lifetime sales.
This announcement came during the latest earnings report, where the company also shared that the Cyberpunk Trading Card Game has raised $28 million on Kickstarter, making it the most funded game and the third most funded project overall in the platform’s history.
Regarding the new DLC, Song of the Past, more details were revealed during a Q&A session in an anniversary livestream. The team hinted at the expansion’s length, with social media manager Laura Beitzel stating, “Songs of the Past will be aligned with what you’re familiar with from Blood and Wine.” For reference, Blood and Wine, the second major expansion for The Witcher 3, typically takes players around 28 hours to complete, rivaling many full games in length.
For fans of Gwent, there’s exciting news: like previous expansions, Songs of the Past will include more Gwent content. Given that official support for Gwent: The Witcher Card Game ended in 2023, the introduction of new cards is particularly thrilling.
CD Projekt Red has a lot on its plate. In addition to co-developing Songs of the Past with Fool’s Theory, the studio is also working on the highly anticipated Witcher 4, which will feature Geralt’s apprentice, Ciri, as the main character. Furthermore, they are developing a remake of the original Witcher game and an untitled sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. While only Song of the Past has a confirmed release date, it seems likely that fans can expect to reunite with Geralt soon.
Ciri is set to take the lead in a new Witcher trilogy.
