This compact Game Boy replica offers a budget-friendly alternative to the Analogue Pocket.
FunnyPlaying, a Chinese brand recognized for its Game Boy and GBA upgrade kits, has unveiled a new handheld device that supports original Nintendo cartridges and ROMs. The FPGB Mini is designed specifically for Game Boy and Game Boy Color games, making it less versatile than the Analogue Pocket, which also accommodates GBA and Sega Game Gear titles. However, the FPGB Mini stands out with its ultra-portable design, being only slightly wider than a Game Boy cartridge, and its more affordable price point.
With recent price increases, the Analogue Pocket now retails for $239.99, while the FPGB Mini was initially priced at $89.99 but is currently available for a limited time at $69.99 for the first batch of just 20 units, which sold out quickly. There are indications that more units may be released after some hardware enhancements, as noted by a source that has been testing the device and has expressed positive feedback regarding its design and performance.
Similar to the Pocket, the FPGB Mini utilizes field-programmable gate array (FPGA) technology to deliver gameplay that closely mirrors the original Game Boy and GBC experience. It features upgrades such as a 2.98-inch, 800×720-pixel LCD display, an 1,800mAh rechargeable battery, and a microSD slot for saving games, taking screenshots, or storing ROMs for emulation. While its compact form factor limits compatibility with cartridges that have rumble motors or other hardware features, the FPGB Mini is shaping up to be one of the smallest handhelds in the Game Boy lineage.
