This stunning pixel art cyberpunk game is impressively beautiful.

After the letdown of Replaced, gamers are eager for another stylish cyberpunk pixel art experience to dive into. Enter Sky Dust, an upcoming Metroidvania Soulslike that’s ready to fill that void.

Set in a dystopian Brazil, the narrative unfolds as the nation suffers from the moon’s toxic influence and a mysterious phenomenon known as digital decay. You step into the shoes of a ruthless mercenary armed with an energy sword, tracking down targets in a crumbling neon metropolis. The gameplay seems to blend exploration with intense action, showcasing the protagonist dodging and parrying against machines, augmented city dwellers, and gangs. The trailer hints at stealth takedowns, finishing moves, and mechanics that revolve around fatigue.

The game’s official description paints a vivid picture:

Despite its downfall, São Paulo remains vibrant: street vendors, shops, and arcades light up the chaos. Your missions will take you deep into the city’s hidden depths, through high-speed motorcycle chases, and into the corrupted layers of the Cyberverse…

Explore the city’s districts and tackle side quests from shady characters and outcasts — or lend a hand to everyday survivors fighting to get by.

Announced last year, Sky Dust proudly showcases its inspirations. The main character and his customizable augmented arm evoke memories of Cyberpunk 2077, while the fuchsia-and-blue palette of São Paulo feels like it belongs in the Blade Runner universe. The visuals carry a hint of Hyper Light Drifter. The latest trailer, exclusive to Reddit, even refers to your weapon as a lightsaber and draws parallels between the game’s cyberbikes and the iconic sci-fi anime Akira. In a Reddit AMA about a previous title from developer Orbit Studios, the team expressed their passion for sci-fi, citing influences from writers like Isaac Asimov and Arthur Clarke, as well as films like Back to the Future, Blade Runner, and Interstellar.

Typically, I’d roll my eyes at a game that overtly claims to be cool. However, after witnessing the main character slice through foes while zooming on a cyberbike, I have to admit that Sky Dust looks absolutely stunning.

Now, the big question remains: Can Sky Dust truly deliver on its promise? We’ll have to wait a bit longer to find out, as this cybernetic hack-and-slash currently lacks a release date.
