This Week Sees the Launch of the 1408 4K Steelbook Edition Exclusive to Amazon
This week marks the arrival of another Stephen King classic on 4K Blu-ray. The psychological horror film 1408, featuring John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson, is set to release on January 13, exclusively on Amazon for $40. The Limited Edition Steelbook is a three-disc collection that includes both the theatrical and extended cuts of the film. With stunning original artwork on the collectible steelbook case and slipcover, this edition stands out as one of the best-designed 4K Blu-ray releases of a Stephen King adaptation available today.
Based on a 1999 short story by King, 1408 follows Mike Enslin, a grieving author who explores supposedly haunted locations. His latest investigation leads him to room 1408 at The Dolphin hotel in New York City. The film was a significant box office success, showcasing impressive performances from both Cusack and Jackson.
For those interested in the Director’s Cut, it’s available on standard Blu-ray for $9.24 (down from $15) and on DVD for $5.63. King’s original version of 1408 was part of Blood and Smoke, an audiobook-only release narrated by the author, which never saw a print edition. However, 1408 is included in two print collections: Everything’s Eventual and Stephen King Goes to the Movies.
The 2002 collection Everything’s Eventual features 1408 along with 13 other stories, including notable titles like Riding the Bullet and The Man in the Black Suit. This collection is available in paperback for $15.18 (originally $20). The 2009 collection Stephen King Goes to the Movies compiles five stories and novellas that inspired feature films, including 1408 and Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption. While this collection seems to be out of print in the US, the UK paperback edition is available on Amazon for $20.
In recent months, Amazon has released several exclusive 4K steelbooks, including The Dead Zone Limited Edition Steelbook, which launched last June for $32 (originally $45), and The Long Walk Limited Edition Steelbook, released in November for $35. A standard edition of The Long Walk was released in December but is priced higher at $43 compared to the Steelbook.
Looking ahead, there are more 4K Blu-ray releases for Stephen King fans to anticipate. The 1979 miniseries Salem’s Lot is set for a 4K restoration by Arrow Video on March 31, with preorders currently discounted to $44.73 (down from $60). It: Welcome to Derry will be available on 4K, 1080p, and DVD on May 5, although the 4K Steelbook Edition has been sold out for over a month. The 2025 remake of The Running Man is scheduled for release on March 3, featuring three different 4K Blu-ray editions. Walmart will offer an exclusive 2-Movie Collection with separate steelbook cases for both the 2025 and 1987 versions of The Running Man, available for preorder at $60, just $10 more than the Steelbook Edition for the 2025 film alone.
