This week’s standout video game trailer features a wild Yakuza-inspired adventure where you take down enemies using American flags.
Europe’s biggest gaming event, Gamescom, kicked off earlier this week with a two-hour showcase packed with both new and previously revealed titles. Attendees got fresh glimpses of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation and The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past, along with debut trailers for Hoyoverse’s Elden Ring-inspired Nodusfall and the long-anticipated Lego Skylines. However, the standout moment for me was the absolutely bonkers trailer from Nekcom Entertainment for Showa American Story.
This single-player RPG is set to launch on PC and PlayStation 5, taking players to an alternate-history 1980s America, where Japan has culturally taken over. You step into the shoes of Choko, who rises from the dead to embark on a classic American road trip, battling zombies, monsters, and a variety of human survivors along the way. Imagine Yakuza meets Lollipop Chainsaw.
Initially, I had my doubts. Who shows up in booty shorts at a temple? But once the hilariously named character “Michael Hero” made his entrance, I was all in. Like Yakuza, expect sword fights, fist fights, and some rather rotund nude characters. You’ll face off against hordes of enemies at times, while other encounters might just involve delivering a swift knee to an unfortunate foe. There’s even a side quest where Choko scouts locations for pink films, which are essentially Japanese softcore porn. You can also enjoy hopscotch in playgrounds and play shooters in arcade cabinets. The cherry on top? You can wield the American flag as a melee weapon, using it for crowd control or as a rocket-powered finisher that launches your opponent skyward while you and the onlookers salute the USA. Just make sure it doesn’t touch the ground!
The trailer hints that Showa American Story will take a satirical jab at American culture, something many western games have shied away from in recent years. “America was never a place. It’s a dream. A dream drunk on bourbon, refusing to wake up at four in the morning,” the President narrates. “Is this the twenty-first century we dreamed of?” Given that a bag of Doritos now costs $8, a PS5 Pro is priced at $900, and there’s no sign of a Back to the Future 2 hoverboard, I think we can all agree the answer is a resounding “nope!”
This isn’t the first time Showa American Story has been on our radar. The developers released another trailer back in November 2024, and the game was first announced in January 2022. While there’s no official release date yet, the developers have indicated it will launch sometime in 2026.
