Tim Schafer Confirms No Current Plans for Brütal Legend 2
If you were hoping for a new Brütal Legend game now that Double Fine is back on its own, Tim Schafer has unfortunately dashed those dreams. The studio is currently focusing on smaller, more unconventional projects, though Schafer remains open to the idea of a sequel in the future.
During an August 21 appearance on a gaming podcast, Schafer was asked directly about the possibility of Brütal Legend 2. He responded, “We’re not working on that now. But maybe someday. I mean, there’s a lot there to work with. But right now, we’re going to make a whole bunch of crazy little weird things.”
One viewer pointed out that creating a new Brütal Legend might be challenging due to the passing of heavy metal legends like Ozzy Osbourne and Lemmy Kilmister. Schafer acknowledged this but also noted that there’s potential to highlight a new wave of artists if a sequel were ever to happen.
“Making Brütal Legend, I drew from all the stuff I loved in high school, and while making the game, I discovered a ton of bands I hadn’t heard of before. Since then, people have approached me with new metal bands, so there are always fresh faces in the scene. We still have Rob Halford and Lita Ford with us, but we did lose Ozzy and Lemmy. I love that you can play Brütal Legend and see a beautiful representation of those icons… It’s like a time capsule of these legends in their prime. There are always new great artists we could feature in the game.”
While Schafer is open to the idea of a sequel someday, he’s clear that there are no current plans for it. In the meantime, fans can look forward to updates on Kiln and the Amnesia Fortnight 2026 – Indie Reboot Kickstarter, which will fund a game jam and documentary. One of the games created during that jam will even be officially released, marking a significant milestone for Double Fine since its separation from Xbox Game Studios.
Double Fine was part of Xbox Game Studios from June 2019 until July 2026. Recently, the new CEO announced plans to divest from several studios, stating that “it is neither possible nor desirable to own every great independent studio.” Following this, Double Fine laid off 23 developers but has since regained the rights to all its IP and is forging a new path.
As it stands, that path does not include Brütal Legend 2 in the near future. If you’re eager to dive back into the original Brütal Legend, it’s readily available on PC and can be played on Xbox One and Xbox Series X through backward compatibility with the Xbox 360 version. It’s even still part of the Xbox Game Pass Premium catalog.
The studio is gearing up for its first live-streamed game jam since 2019.
