Tim Sweeney Positions Epic as the Hero for AAA Gaming Amid Roblox’s Rise

Epic Games is more than just the force behind Fortnite and Rocket League; it’s also the steward of Unreal Engine, the powerful toolkit that fuels everything from The Witcher 4 to the next Halo installment. During Unreal Fest 2026 in Chicago, CEO Tim Sweeney took the stage to promote Unreal Engine 6 as a viable alternative to the closed ecosystems dominating the gaming landscape, like Roblox.

Sweeney highlighted that traditional AAA gaming is at a “time of both crisis and opportunity,” as outdated practices begin to falter. He noted, “We’re seeing often hundreds of millions of dollars in development costs followed by tens of millions in revenue. The development costs keep rising, and it feels like a tidal wave is sweeping over the AAA game business.”

Despite having laid off 1,000 employees earlier this year, Sweeney asserted that Fortnite is thriving once more, and games like it are set to lead in a market where newer entrants prioritize social interaction. “The other big change is the economy is shifting from purchasing games to buying in-game items,” he remarked. “Whether you’re a fan or not, it’s undeniable.” He pointed out that the fierce competition for players’ attention poses a significant threat to traditional gaming models, with Roblox currently leading that charge. Sweeney believes that embracing Unreal Engine is essential for other developers to withstand this challenge.

“There are two major predictions for the future as these issues ripple through the industry,” Sweeney stated. “One perspective is that Roblox will continue to grow and dominate gaming. Many are saying this online. You have a centralized platform with a gatekeeper taking over 70 percent of revenue and boasting 450 million users. That’s a real challenge for game developers.”

He continued:

However, we envision a very different future—one that’s much brighter for everyone here. It’s a future of high-quality gaming that rises to the occasion, connecting our content, communities, and economies to deliver fun and serve gamers with exceptional experiences like never before. To achieve this, we must change how we create games. We need to build better games more efficiently and design for connectivity, where all players and economies are linked, allowing them to see these experiences as part of a global ecosystem that all developers contribute to.

We want to collaborate with all of you and with every game developer to make this happen. Unreal Engine 6 is our technological foundation for this vision, and we believe it’s a significant challenge we must all rise to. We need to win the competition for players—not just against other games but also against platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and everything else that captures attention online. This was a key consideration in the development of Unreal Engine 6.

Sweeney has been discussing a version of this global ecosystem for several years, previously tied more closely to a vision of an interoperable metaverse. Now, he’s presenting a more nuanced vision of collaboration among major companies that utilize Unreal Engine for their games. However, this new framework is also linked to the introduction of generative AI integrations in the upcoming version of Unreal Engine, prompting some developers to reconsider their partnerships with Epic due to the controversial technology’s inclusion.

Is a Roblox alternative, where one company still controls the tools, the best path for game developers? Perhaps not. Yet, Epic does have the advantage of more favorable revenue-sharing terms and ongoing antitrust legal battles that challenge monopolies in the mobile gaming sector. “We have the opportunity to form Team Open and redefine the future of gaming together,” Sweeney stated. It remains to be seen who will join him in this endeavor.
