Today could have been the day we played GTA 6.
May 26, 2026, is a significant date for Grand Theft Auto enthusiasts. It was once slated to be the launch day for Grand Theft Auto 6. However, during the recent earnings call, Take-Two Interactive’s CEO, Strauss Zelnick, confirmed that the game is now set to release on November 19. This date has sparked a wave of nostalgia and anticipation among fans on social media, prompting them to reflect on the lengthy wait for the sequel and share their hopes for what’s to come.
On the GTA 6 subreddit, fans are posting a variety of memes about midnight launches, the “night before nothing,” and expressing their frustration over the inevitable flood of “we would have played it today” comments. Others are bringing a positive vibe to the discussion, using this moment to speculate on the final adjustments Rockstar might be making.
One user shared their thoughts, saying, “In my opinion, the game has been ready since the end of 2025, but they want it to be as perfect as possible. I think they’re just doing extreme polishing to ensure the game comes out as flawless as they can make it.” Another chimed in, “I’d hope so, but Rockstar is notorious for crunch, and I would guess scope creep plays a role in that.”
Crunch refers to the pressure on developers to work long hours, including nights and weekends, to meet deadlines, and it has been a notable issue for Rockstar Games in the past. Just before the release of Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018, a critical report highlighted the demanding work culture at Rockstar, featuring insights from numerous current and former employees. This led to significant backlash regarding the extensive overtime required, prompting management to implement new policies aimed at improving work-life balance.
Tensions flared again in November 2025 when several U.K.-based employees alleged they were dismissed for trying to unionize. That same month, Rockstar announced the delay of GTA 6 to its new release date of November 19, stating, “We apologize for adding more time to what we know has been a long wait, but these extra months will allow us to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve.” Rockstar and Take-Two have not provided detailed explanations for the delays.
So, when can we expect more news about GTA 6? Despite rampant speculation that a third trailer was imminent, Zelnick recently confirmed that marketing for GTA 6 will kick off in the summer, which officially starts on June 21. This means we’ll have to hang tight for a few more weeks.
No offense to Strauss Zelnick, but if we’re all hanging on his every word, something has gone awry.
