Today’s Wordle Challenge Caused a Major Internet Outage
Wordle, the popular word-guessing game that has become a daily ritual for many since 2021, threw players a curveball on December 19 with an especially tricky word. I don’t usually play Wordle, so I didn’t think much of it when my coworkers started discussing how challenging today’s word was. That changed when I ventured beyond the usual chat and saw a wave of frustrated players across the internet.
Today’s word is “myrrh,” which, for those unfamiliar, is a fragrant gum resin sourced from various trees in Arabia and Africa, often used in perfumes, medicines, and incense. Many players typically kick off their Wordle attempts by guessing vowels first, then filling in consonants based on their placements. However, with “myrrh” lacking any vowels, players found themselves at a significant disadvantage. Countless attempts ended in failure, leaving many feeling defeated.

These reactions are just a glimpse of the social media frenzy, and they’re among the milder responses. I was taken aback by some of the more extreme reactions I encountered, which I won’t detail here. While edgy humor and wild comparisons are common in gaming circles, the vitriol directed at the game’s developers was surprising. If you’re curious about the more outrageous responses, a quick search will reveal plenty.
In any case, perhaps “myrrh” will make a comeback in Wordle when the game show version hosted by Jimmy Fallon debuts, giving someone the chance to crash out on live television.
