The Fallout TV show made waves with the introduction of a brand new Power Armor in its second season, and franchise overseer Todd Howard believes it might be the coolest variant Bethesda has ever created.

The New California Republic Power Armor is significant as it marks its first appearance in Fallout lore, having not been featured in any games prior to the episode’s release. This addition also redefines the NCR’s role as a key player in the post-apocalyptic landscape.

Todd Howard, the lead at Bethesda Game Studios and a frequent director for Fallout titles, shared that the concept for this new Power Armor variant emerged during the early stages of the show’s second season. “I suggested, ‘Hey, every game we introduce a new cool Power Armor. We’re doing Deathclaws. What do you think about this NCR Deathclaw-killer armor?’ So we collaborated on that,” Howard explained.

“I had seen it in sketches, and then visiting the set and seeing it in person, I thought, this is the most badass Power Armor we’ve ever created,” he added, noting it’s “awesome” that the NCR Power Armor has made its way into Fallout 76 recently.

However, the video game version of the armor has sparked some debate. Players can only obtain the NCR suit through a Fallout 76 DLC bundle priced at $30/£27, which primarily includes cosmetic items. Additionally, its presence in a prequel game raises questions since the NCR didn’t exist at that time.

The showrunner for Fallout season 2 hints that the series may be taking a page from Fallout 4 for the finale’s major twist.
