Tom Cruise’s ambitious space film with the director of Edge of Tomorrow has reportedly been canceled.
Tom Cruise’s ambitious space film project has hit a snag, proving to be a challenge even for the action star. The collaboration with Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman has reportedly been shelved.
Sources indicate that the film reached an impasse due to Cruise’s hesitation to seek the necessary permissions from the President to collaborate with NASA. An insider revealed, “They would need NASA coordination to do the movie, and supposedly Tom Cruise did not want to ask Donald Trump for a favor. You’d need permission from the federal government. Tom didn’t want to ask for political reasons.”
Back in 2020, it was announced that Cruise would be involved in the first narrative film shot in space, with a NASA administrator confirming that filming would take place aboard the International Space Station.
Updates were sparse until 2022, when a studio executive confirmed that “Tom Cruise is taking us to space. He’s taking the world to space.” The project was described as involving Cruise taking a rocket to the space station, with hopes of him becoming the first civilian to perform a spacewalk.
The untitled film was set to feature Cruise as “a down-on-his-luck guy who finds himself in the position of being the only person who could save Earth.” It’s a disappointment for fans that we won’t get to see Cruise in a spacewalk.
Next on the horizon for the Mission: Impossible star is an untitled film directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu. Details are still under wraps, but it will feature a strong ensemble cast, including Jesse Plemons, Emma D’Arcy, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Riz Ahmed, Sophie Wilde, and Michael Stuhlbarg.
This new project is slated for release on October 2, 2026.
