Tom Holland Eager to Step Away from Spider-Man for a New Role

Tom Holland’s upcoming fourth Spider-Man film, *Spider-Man: Brand New Day*, is just around the corner. From the way he speaks, it seems he’s gearing up for this installment to signal the beginning of the end for his time in the iconic red-and-blue suit.

In a recent chat, Holland expressed his enthusiasm for the next Spider-themed hero to emerge in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “For whoever’s next, whether that’s a Miles Morales or a Spider-Gwen or a Spider-Woman, I would love to help set up the next chapter,” he shared. “Whatever that looks like, I don’t know. But if I could do for the next hero what Downey did for me, I’d be thrilled to swing off into the sunset.”

While there’s been no official word from Disney or Marvel about introducing another Spider-themed character to the MCU, the idea of bringing in Miles Morales or another Spider-hero is complicated by licensing agreements with Sony, which holds the live-action rights to Spider-Man characters. This means Holland might have to wait a while before he can mentor a new Spider-Man or Spider-Woman, similar to how Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark guided his character in earlier MCU films.

His sentiments echo what he said five years ago leading up to *Spider-Man: No Way Home*, when he mentioned, “Maybe it is time for me to move on. Maybe what’s best for Spider-Man is that they do a Miles Morales film. I have to consider Peter Parker as well, because he’s a significant part of my life.” Holland also remarked, “If I’m playing Spider-Man after I’m 30, I’ve done something wrong.” (He turned 30 on June 1.)

Leaving such a successful franchise—especially after the last Spider-Man film raked in over $1.9 billion—might seem unexpected, but Holland has been embodying this role for a third of his life. He was just 19 when he first appeared in *Captain America: Civil War*, and *Brand New Day* will mark his seventh outing as the web-slinger. It’s understandable that he might be looking for a fresh challenge as an actor.

Holland didn’t participate in the recent *Avengers: Doomsday* chair reveals and isn’t confirmed for the film set to premiere in December. However, the MCU is known for its surprises, so he could still make an appearance in *Doomsday* or its 2027 sequel, *Avengers: Secret Wars*. By the time *Secret Wars* hits theaters, Holland will be 31.

*Spider-Man: Brand New Day* swings into theaters on July 31.

The first trailer for Spider-Man 4 has confirmed several villains and teased even more.
