Tomb Raider: Catalyst Pushed Back to 2028 Release Date

The Tomb Raider franchise faces another setback, as Tomb Raider: Catalyst has been delayed by a year, now scheduled for release in 2028. This follows the earlier news that Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis has also been pushed back, now set to launch on February 12, 2027.

Both games were initially revealed at the 2025 Game Awards, with Legacy of Atlantis originally slated for a 2026 release and Catalyst for 2027. However, recent announcements from Amazon Game Studios, Crystal Dynamics, and Flying Wild Hog have altered those timelines. The early June update brought some relief to fans, as Legacy of Atlantis was still expected to arrive in early 2027, barring any further delays.

In a recent interview, Jeffrey Gattis, Amazon’s head of gaming, confirmed the new timeline for Catalyst, which caught many fans off guard. With no specific date beyond the year, it appears the game has been postponed by a full year.

During the interview, Gattis discussed Amazon’s gaming service, Luna, and the company’s ambitions to broaden its user base. Amazon aims to offer a diverse library of games, allowing players to enjoy various experiences without the need for expensive hardware. It was in this context that he mentioned the Tomb Raider titles and the delay of Catalyst.

“We range from what we call Game Night games, which are those phone-as-a-controller games — single-A titles that are in the single millions of dollars to develop — all the way up to AAA. We have announced the two Tomb Raider titles. [Legacy of] Atlantis comes February 12 next year, and then we’ll follow on in 2028 with the next one. We’re excited about those. There are some other AAA things that are in various stages of discussion right now. Ultimately, we want to build an identity with Luna, where we have a content portfolio that resonates with people, where they think, ‘Oh gosh, that’s the place that has Tomb Raider, and maybe Bond, and they have these other things.’ And that takes time to go build. But, for us to be the platform we want to be, and the one we believe we can be, you very much have to have original content.”

It’s unclear if these changes are tied to a strategic focus on Amazon Luna, but the community seems to be accepting of the news. Fans prefer to see the titles developed thoroughly rather than rushed, and the delay for Legacy of Atlantis may provide the necessary time to refine it before moving on to the next installment in the series.

Legacy of Atlantis has solid foundations, and its delay in 2027 may ultimately save it from potential pitfalls.
