Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has shared that Top Gun 3 and Pirates of the Caribbean 6 are in a close race for which sequel will start production first, with one slightly ahead of the other.

“I think it’s a horse race between the two of them, so we’ll see,” Bruckheimer mentioned. “Right now, Top Gun is a hair ahead, but that’s it. We’re expecting a script shortly.”

Following the success of 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick, star Miles Teller revealed he had been advocating for a third film centered on his character Rooster and had discussions with Tom Cruise. A sequel was officially greenlit in 2024, with Christopher McQuarrie confirming he was working on the script in 2025.

As for Pirates of the Caribbean, there has been a lot of mixed information since the release of Dead Men Tell No Tales in 2017. The sixth film was announced that same year, with star Kaya Scodelario confirming her return. In 2018, Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick were brought on to write the screenplay but departed in 2019. Fast forward to 2024, when Bruckheimer revealed that two different Pirates movies are in development, one of which will feature Margot Robbie. According to Bruckheimer, the sixth installment aims to bring back familiar characters… but we’ll have to wait and see.
