Towerborne on Xbox is transitioning from free-to-play to a paid model.

Towerborne, a side-scrolling action RPG currently in early access, is set to officially launch on February 26th. In a shift from its initial concept as a free-to-play, always-online title, Towerborne will now be a paid game that supports offline play.

Trisha Stouffer, CEO and president of developer Stoic, shared in a blog post that players will own the complete experience permanently, featuring both offline gameplay and online co-op. “This change required deep structural rebuilding over the past year, transforming systems originally designed around constant connectivity. The result is a stronger, more accessible, and more player-friendly version of Towerborne — one we’re incredibly proud to bring to launch.”

An FAQ noted that feedback from the community during Early Access and Game Preview indicated a desire for a polished experience without ongoing monetization. Transitioning to a premium model allows the team to deliver the full game upfront—eliminating live-service grind and pay-to-win mechanics, ensuring players get the best version of Towerborne.

As live service games like Fortnite and Roblox continue to dominate, Towerborne’s move to a premium, offline-capable experience could attract players looking to avoid another time-consuming commitment. Personally, this shift makes Towerborne more appealing.

The 1.0 release will feature a “complete” story, new bosses, and a revamped difficulty system. Players can earn all in-game cosmetics through gameplay, with no additional purchases required. Those already in early access will retain access to the game.

Towerborne will launch on February 26th for Xbox Series X/S, Xbox on PC, Game Pass, Steam, and PS5. The standard edition will be priced at $24.99, while the deluxe edition will be available for $29.99.
