Troy Baker Embraces AI Revolution, But for Unexpected Reasons

Prolific voice actor Troy Baker has expressed his belief that the rise of generative AI is a “good thing,” as it encourages people to seek out “authentic” experiences crafted by artists rather than settling for AI-generated “gruel.” In a recent interview, Baker acknowledged that while “AI can make content way better than humans” and can produce it effortlessly, it’s crucial to distinguish between content and art. He emphasized, “AI can create content but it cannot create art,” pointing out that true artistry stems from the human experience.

Baker noted that there’s a fundamental truth about art that many overlook: it requires artists. He remarked, “People go, ‘Look what AI can do.’ It’s like, ‘Yeah, okay. I see what it’s capable of doing. It doesn’t matter.'” He believes there’s no need to belittle or demonize AI; instead, we should recognize its presence. From a business standpoint, Baker sees AI as a potential threat, but he also believes it could ultimately benefit artists. “What I see happening is that this birth of AI, and this burgeoning industry of it, is actually going to drive people to the authentic,” he said. He envisions a future where audiences crave live performances, theater, and books, preferring genuine experiences over the diluted content produced by AI. “I think that it’s a good thing. It’s a revolution.”

The use of AI in game development, particularly for voice work, has sparked significant debate, especially following the SAG-AFTRA video game actors strike that addressed actor protections concerning AI. Despite some player backlash, certain developers are pressing ahead with AI integration in their games. For instance, Embark Studios, known for last year’s hit Arc Raiders, employs AI to generate NPC voices. Additionally, actors like Matthew McConaughey and Michael Caine have entered agreements allowing their voices to be utilized by AI. Even after James Earl Jones passed away in 2024, an AI rendition of his iconic Darth Vader voice made headlines in Fortnite, particularly when players manipulated the AI to utter inappropriate phrases.

Baker, a SAG-AFTRA member, recently garnered praise for his role as Indiana Jones in MachineGames’ Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. Harrison Ford, the original Indiana Jones actor, commended Baker’s performance, stating, “[Baker] did a brilliant job, and it didn’t take AI to do it.”
