Two additional DC series have been axed as James Gunn’s DC Universe faces ongoing challenges.
The DC Universe is facing some significant cuts. Recent reports indicate that two more shows have been axed: the spin-off series Waller, centered around The Suicide Squad, and Paradise Lost, which was set in Themyscira. This follows last month’s news that a Booster Gold series was also in jeopardy, although there may still be hope for it.
In 2023, DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran unveiled an ambitious lineup of movies and TV shows. This included last year’s Superman (initially titled Superman: Legacy), June’s Supergirl (originally Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow), and the upcoming Lanterns, set to premiere soon. Waller was part of this slate, featuring Viola Davis reprising her role as Amanda Waller, a character who has appeared in various DCEU and DCU projects, including the recent Creature Commandos, which kicked off this new era.
Paradise Lost was another intriguing addition to the DCU lineup, focusing on the origins and political dynamics of an all-female island, as described by DC Studios.
With three out of five of the initially announced TV series now canceled, the fate of Booster Gold remains uncertain. Although writer David Jenkins has exited the project, DC Studios is reportedly seeking a new creative team to revive it.
These cancellations come as the DCU struggles to establish itself. Superman received a warm reception but only grossed over $600 million at the box office, which pales in comparison to the rapid success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Supergirl, on the other hand, faced criticism and flopped with a mere $126 million in box office earnings. Both characters are set to return in 2027’s Man of Tomorrow, which will introduce Brainiac.
Next up for the DCU is Clayface, a film that promises to be delightfully grotesque. Alongside this and the Superman sequel, DC Studios has a range of projects in development, including a Batman movie—distinct from Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson’s separate Batman film, which is still a long way off.
James Gunn has likened the DCU’s potential to that of Game of Thrones or Star Wars before the rise of the MCU.
