Two Nintendo Directs Are Set to Air Next Week

Nintendo has revealed plans for not one, but two Direct presentations next week. The first will be a general showcase highlighting upcoming games for the Switch 2, while the second will celebrate the 40th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda.

This information comes from an update on the Nintendo Today app. The Zelda-focused Direct is set for September 8 at 7 a.m. Pacific / 10 a.m. Eastern and will run for about 30 minutes. The general Direct will follow on September 9 at the same time, lasting around 45 minutes. Both events will be streamed on Nintendo’s YouTube and Twitch channels.

While the general showcase is shrouded in mystery, we can make some educated guesses about the Zelda presentation. A remake of Ocarina of Time for the Switch 2 is almost certain to be a highlight, and there’s a good chance we’ll finally see a trailer for the live-action film set to debut on April 30. So far, we’ve only glimpsed a few stills and behind-the-scenes images, along with some casting news. With the 40th anniversary in focus, it seems like the perfect moment for a proper teaser.

It would be quite surprising to hear anything about the next mainline Zelda game following Tears of the Kingdom, as it’s only been three years since that release, and Link’s adventures typically take longer to develop. However, it’s worth noting that Breath of the Wild was first teased in 2014, just three years after Skyward Sword. So, anything is possible!

It’s great to see Nintendo giving Zelda the attention it deserves for this milestone, especially since it felt like the franchise was somewhat overlooked in the past. According to some former employees, it seems that Nintendo is less focused on making big anniversaries a major event compared to how The Pokémon Company handles its celebrations. Still, a lot can happen in 30 minutes, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
