Two standout indie titles are being transformed into board games.
Two standout indie games from the last decade are making the leap to physical board game adaptations. Party House, a highlight from UFO 50, is transforming into a deckbuilder, while the mind-bending puzzler Baba is You from 2019 is being reimagined as a competitive board game.
Party House is a captivating title in the UFO 50 lineup. Players aim to host parties and attract VIP guests while avoiding the attention of the police or fire department. The challenge lies in balancing the number of guests to maximize both popularity and cash without risking a visit from law enforcement. There’s an element of randomness in guest appearances, but players can spend cash between parties to expand their house or recruit new guests to their roster.
Party House: The Deckbuilding Game introduces some fresh mechanics to this concept. It accommodates up to four players, merges money and popularity into a single currency, and combines house capacity with a new “Trouble” threshold. Players must transition to the shopping phase if their Trouble exceeds seven during a party.
On the other hand, Baba is You: The Board Game takes the innovative mechanics of the original puzzle game and adapts them into a competitive format. The objective is to connect an “Is You” descriptor with an “Is Win” descriptor. While these adaptations weren’t the most anticipated, they both seem like excellent fits for the tabletop gaming scene.
Jon Perry, the original developer of UFO 50 and Party House, is behind Party House: The Deckbuilding Game. The designer of Baba is You, Hempuli Oy, collaborated on its board game adaptation with Peter C. Hayward from That Time You Killed Me and publisher Bitewing Games.
A Kickstarter campaign to fund both Party House: The Deckbuilding Game and Baba is You: The Board Game is set to launch on September 15.
