Typhoon Dujuan Cuts Tokyo Game Show 2026 Short by One Day
Tokyo Game Show 2026 was set to make history as the first edition to span five days. However, the event will now be shortened by a day due to the impending arrival of Typhoon Dujuan.
“Given the approach of Typhoon No. 25, we anticipate strong winds and heavy rain starting this afternoon, along with potential transportation disruptions,” the event organizers stated on X on September 19. “To prioritize the safety of all attendees, exhibitors, and related parties, and to ensure everyone can return home safely, we have decided to cancel the event for the entire day. We sincerely apologize to those who were looking forward to attending.”

The event will proceed as planned on September 20, despite the storm, but all attendees will receive refunds for September 21. It remains uncertain how this will affect game developers who secured booth space for the full five days.
Celebrating its 30th anniversary, Tokyo Game Show 2026 had expanded to five days this year, coinciding with a holiday on September 21 in Japan. While the show has not been heavy on major announcements or game reveals, the exhibition floor has been bustling with several publishers showcasing impressive booths.

The Square Enix area featured a brand-new hands-on demo for Final Fantasy VII Revelation, highlighted by a massive statue of Sephiroth poised to strike the ground with his sword, Masamune. Meanwhile, PlayStation was hosting large screenings of the Grand Theft Auto 6 extended trailer, complete with real-life special effects to enhance the experience.
“As a result [of Typhoon No. 25], the hands-on demos and streaming events scheduled for September 21 (Monday, holiday) at the PlayStation booth will also be canceled,” Sony announced on X today. “We regret to inform everyone who was looking forward to it, but we kindly ask for your understanding.”
Typhoon Dujuan is expected to reach Japan’s Kanto region, including Tokyo, around Monday night, with the Japan Meteorological Agency predicting wind speeds could soar up to 78 miles per hour.
