Ubisoft Claims Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Offers a ‘Complete Experience’ Amidst Rising Negative Steam Reviews Over Microtransactions
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is receiving solid reviews from critics and has already hit the 2 million sales mark. However, the reception on Steam isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. A wave of negative player feedback has emerged, primarily focused on the extensive list of microtransactions in the Ubisoft remake. In response, the developer has clarified that none of the paid DLCs are necessary to fully enjoy the game.
Currently, Black Flag Resynced holds a 76-percent positive rating on Steam, with players voicing concerns over its monetization strategy. Priced at $60, which is competitive compared to the $70 tag of many new releases, the Steam page also features nearly $85 worth of day-one DLC. This includes cosmetic items for the main character, Edward Kenway, and ship decorations, but also gameplay-affecting content like a $10 map pack that reveals secret locations, potentially saving players from extensive searching.
One Steam user expressed frustration, stating, “When a game dev creates an entire map, it makes sense to add collectible items to encourage exploration. It’s fun to check off items and feel like you’ve conquered the game. But making it paid DLC to see them, rather than letting players toggle minimap icons, is just annoying and greedy. It shouldn’t cost money to avoid aimless wandering in a single-player game.”
Another user succinctly questioned their own purchase, saying, “I mean, I bought it. Am I the stupid one for enabling this behavior?” In light of the backlash, Ubisoft has taken the unusual step of addressing the criticism directly.
“We’ve seen your feedback since launch, and we’re reading all of it,” a representative stated in response to a negative review. “Thank you for caring this much about Black Flag Resynced. We want to clarify: the standard edition is the full, complete experience. Every mission, every island, the full story, and the complete world are all included, with nothing held back. The additional packs are entirely optional for players who want them, and are never required to enjoy or complete the game.”
This stands in contrast to titles like Grand Theft Auto VI, which faced backlash for locking certain content behind a $100 Deluxe Edition. Ubisoft emphasizes that nothing in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is locked behind paid upgrades.
When compared to other recent open-world RPGs in the franchise, Black Flag Resynced’s microtransactions are relatively mild. Previous entries have included purchasable gear that impacts combat and XP boosters to alleviate grind. While Ubisoft’s approach to monetization in single-player games has softened somewhat, players have generally become more accustomed to paid add-ons and cosmetics in gaming.
Despite this, a heated discussion continues on Steam, with 497 comments currently under Ubisoft’s response.
