Ubisoft Closes Iconic 26-Year-Old Studio and Terminates Black Flag Remake Team

As the gaming industry faces ongoing challenges, Ubisoft has revealed another wave of layoffs and studio closures. The Finnish studio RedLynx, renowned for its motorcycle racing series Trials, is set to shut down. Additionally, significant layoffs are occurring at Ubisoft Singapore, which recently worked on Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced.

In a leaked statement, Ubisoft noted, “Today, we informed our teams of a proposal to close RedLynx in Finland, subject to the local change negotiation process, which would affect up to 52 positions. At Ubisoft Singapore, 70 positions have been impacted to align the studio with upcoming production needs. The studio remains an important part of Ubisoft’s global production organization.”

Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced was well-received, selling over 3 million copies in its first week and achieving 99,000 concurrent players on Steam, marking the largest debut in the franchise’s history. Prior to this, Ubisoft Singapore was involved in the development of Skull and Bones, a pirate game that faced a troubled production journey.

Ubisoft expressed its appreciation for the contributions of both teams, stating, “We deeply value the contributions of both teams and recognize the impact this may have on our colleagues. We are committed to supporting our teams throughout this process and conducting it with care and respect.”

In October 2025, Ubisoft announced plans to lay off up to 60 employees at RedLynx, shifting the focus of the remaining staff towards mobile game development. The studio’s last major title was Trials Rising in 2019, after which it worked on a Stadia port of The Division 2, released Gwen’s Getaway on mobile, and provided support for 2025’s Star Wars: Outlaws.

Founded in 2000, RedLynx has developed over 30 titles, starting with Trials, a browser-based motorcycle trials game. This was followed by Trials 2 and the popular Trials HD for Xbox 360 in 2009. The Trials series is known for its challenging gameplay, where players must skillfully maneuver their motorcycles through difficult terrains. Trials HD debuted during the second annual Xbox Live Summer of Arcade and sold over 2 million copies. Ubisoft acquired RedLynx in 2011, leading to the release of Trials Evolution, Trials Fusion, and Trials Rising under its banner.

The closure of RedLynx and layoffs at Ubisoft Singapore highlight the financial difficulties Ubisoft is currently facing. In March 2025, the company spun off several major franchises—Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six—into a separate entity supported by tech giant Tencent. Just last week, Ubisoft announced the shutdown of the Rainbow Six mobile game, alongside the cancellation of five other projects and the delay of seven games.
