Ubisoft Embraces “Player-Facing Generative AI” as Other Developers Explore AI Tools

So far, most major game studios have positioned AI as a behind-the-scenes asset to help developers streamline the game creation process, rather than as a tool for generating in-game content that players will directly engage with. Ubisoft is taking a bold step forward, announcing in its recent restructuring plans that it intends to integrate generative AI directly into player experiences.

In a statement accompanying the announcement, Ubisoft outlined its focus on open-world and live service games, emphasizing that these initiatives will be “supported by targeted investments, deeper specialization, and cutting-edge technology, including accelerated investments behind player-facing Generative AI.”

The term “player-facing” is particularly noteworthy, indicating that Ubisoft is serious about placing generative AI content front and center for players. The company has been hinting at AI-driven NPCs for years and recently provided a detailed look at its AI companion technology, dubbed Teammates.

Last year, CEO Yves Guillemot expressed that AI would transform open-world games into “your world,” reducing reliance on “pre-scripted things.” Given the current state of generative AI, there’s a concern that the tedious aspects of sprawling 100-hour open-world games might become even more pronounced.

Nexon CEO Junghun Lee remarked last year that “it’s important to assume that every game company is now using AI.” For many prominent figures in the gaming industry, including Hideo Kojima, Todd Howard, and Gabe Newell, AI serves as a valuable tool but shouldn’t replace the creativity of human developers. It will be interesting to see how Ubisoft’s contrasting approach unfolds.

The actor who voices Astarion in Baldur’s Gate 3 has stated, “there’s no f*cking way AI could make” anything comparable to Larian’s acclaimed RPG: “It’s too interesting, subtle, crazy, off the wall, pathos-filled. It’s too human.”
