Ubisoft Scraps Long-Awaited Prince of Persia Remake

Ubisoft has made the tough decision to scrap the remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, along with halting development on five other titles and pushing back the release of seven more as part of a significant company restructuring.

On January 21, Ubisoft revealed its plans to reorganize following a $1.25 billion deal with Tencent, which involves restructuring parts of the company into new studios that will focus on specific franchises and intellectual properties. This major overhaul has resulted in the cancellation of six in-progress games, including the long-awaited Prince of Persia remake, which was first announced back in 2020. Additionally, seven titles have been delayed, with one of them speculated to be the previously mentioned remake of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.

The Prince of Persia remake was initially unveiled in September 2020, with a planned release in 2021, developed by Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai. However, it faced delays, first pushed to March 2021, then again in February 2021 without a new date. In May 2022, Ubisoft announced that Ubisoft Montréal, the studio behind the original Sands of Time, would take over the project, effectively restarting development. At Summer Game Fest 2024, the remake was reintroduced with a brief teaser and a new release window set for 2026. By June 2025, Ubisoft reaffirmed its commitment to the remake, but now, just months later, it has been officially canceled after a tumultuous development journey.

This outcome is disappointing but not entirely unexpected for a project that seemed to be caught in a cycle of constant redevelopment, which is a challenging way to bring a game to life.

In a press release, Ubisoft stated, “The company has conducted a thorough review of its content pipeline over December and January. This has led to the strategic decision to refocus its portfolio, reallocate resources, and comprehensively revise its roadmap over the next three years.”

Ubisoft indicated that the canceled projects did not meet the company’s new quality standards. The list of canceled games includes the Prince of Persia remake, three new IPs, and a mobile title. The company is also dedicating more time to seven other games to ensure they meet enhanced quality benchmarks. One of these delayed titles, originally set for release in fiscal year 2026, is now expected to launch in fiscal year 2027, believed to be the Black Flag remake.
