Ubisoft Takes Initiative to Reduce Workforce After Encouraging Employee Layoffs

Ubisoft has announced that staff reductions are expected at both Ubisoft Stockholm and Massive Entertainment, with around 55 employees facing job losses. Massive, which joined the Ubisoft family in 2008, is known for titles like The Division 2, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, and Star Wars Outlaws.

In their statement, Ubisoft clarified, “This restructuring follows the completion of the Voluntary Leave Program initiated in the fall of 2025, along with a finalized long-term roadmap and a completed staffing and appointment process. These steps have provided clearer insight into the structure and capacity needed to support the ongoing work of both studios sustainably.”

The company added that the restructuring will start with individual agreements, ensuring that affected employees are informed directly and treated with care and respect in accordance with local regulations.

This announcement follows a broader cost-cutting restructuring plan that Ubisoft began a few months ago. In October 2025, the company had encouraged developers at Massive to opt for voluntary layoffs.

This redundancy initiative comes on the heels of a significant investment from Tencent, which put over $1 billion into a smaller subsidiary, Vantage Studios. This new studio will focus on franchises like Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six Siege.

Despite the layoffs, updates for Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 will continue, along with ongoing development for The Division 3 and the survival extraction mode, The Division 2: Survivors.

Job cuts at Ubisoft have been a recurring theme; just last week, the company closed its Halifax office after it unionized, resulting in 71 job losses. Ubisoft stated that the closure was not related to the unionization effort.
