UK Retail Group Criticizes PlayStation’s Move Away from Discs as a Win for Corporate Convenience Over Consumer Freedom

The announcement that Sony intends to phase out PlayStation game discs by early 2028 has sparked significant backlash, particularly from retailers that depend on the physical gaming market. The Entertainment Retailer’s Association (ERA) in the UK recently responded to this news, highlighting some important concerns, even if it may not change Sony’s plans.

“PlayStation’s decision to stop offering major games on disc prioritizes corporate convenience over consumer choice,” stated ERA CEO Kim Bayley. “Every year, millions of gamers opt for physical copies because they appreciate true ownership. A disc can be shared, traded, collected, preserved, and, importantly, played for years to come. A download license often lacks these freedoms.”

The ERA represents major game retailers in the UK, including various well-known names. According to recent data, 45 percent of all physical games sold in the UK last year were for PS4 or PS5, accounting for nearly half of the revenue from physical game sales. Most of these purchases are made online, with customers receiving games by mail rather than visiting stores on release day. While the physical game market is declining, it’s not completely gone yet.

“ERA consumer data indicates that 25 percent of gamers under 25 still use discs, and the UK disc-based games market was valued at over £300 million in 2025, showing there’s still a dedicated audience for boxed games,” Bayley noted. “Retailers witness this demand daily. Physical games continue to draw customers into stores and provide real value through gifting, collecting, and resale.”

She added, “The industry should embrace every legitimate way consumers want to purchase games, rather than limiting their options. Digital distribution has revolutionized gaming and is immensely popular, but it should enhance physical formats, not replace them. Consumers deserve the freedom to choose how they enjoy their entertainment. Eliminating discs doesn’t signify progress; it simply restricts choice. That’s detrimental to gamers, retailers, and the long-term health of our gaming industry.”

While Sony may not be swayed by these arguments, the outcry from players regarding the impending end of physical discs continues to grow. A petition urging the company to reconsider has surpassed 300,000 signatures, and even mainstream media outlets have begun to cover the situation. “Movies still come on Blu-ray, music is still pressed on vinyl, and books still fill store shelves,” one report noted. “Yet as Sony plans to eliminate physical PlayStation releases, many gamers are questioning why video games should be the first major entertainment medium to go entirely digital.”
