Uncertainty Surrounds the Development of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Game
CD Projekt Red is diving into the future with a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, codenamed Project Orion, but that’s not the only title brewing in their creative kitchen. Reports have surfaced about another game inspired by the anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, currently referred to as Gemini.
Gemini is said to be a 2.5D brawler drawing inspiration from the acclaimed anime produced by Studio Trigger, set within the Cyberpunk universe. According to sources, this project is being developed by WayForward, known for titles like River City Girls and Shantae. Details about Gemini were uncovered in a former WayForward developer’s portfolio, which describes it as a rollback-driven brawler slated for development between 2025 and 2026. The portfolio also indicated that this project is a CDPR title in the research and development phase, complete with an internal logo showcasing the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners branding alongside the Gemini name.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners has arguably outshone the RPG it’s based on. While Cyberpunk 2077 struggled for years to recover from a rocky launch, Studio Trigger’s anime received widespread acclaim upon its release in 2022. Since then, Edgerunners has made its mark in other games, with fan-favorite Lucy becoming a playable character in both the fighting game Guilty Gear Strive and the gacha game Wuthering Waves. It seems logical for CD Projekt Red to leverage the popularity of this property with its own game. Additionally, a second season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is set to premiere this fall.
However, there are indications that WayForward had an unannounced project in 2025 that was put on hold, coinciding with a round of layoffs at the studio last September. If this unannounced project was indeed Gemini, it raises questions about the current status of the game. With only the details from the portfolio available, the future of Gemini remains uncertain.
