Underrated Magic card experiences significant price surge with the release of Secrets of Strixhaven Commander.
Magic: The Gathering’s latest expansion, Secrets of Strixhaven, is doing exactly what a great set should: inspiring players to revisit older cards with a new lens.
This leads to fresh deckbuilding ideas, but it also results in some notable shifts in card values. Take Outlaws of Thunder Junction, for instance. While it may not be the go-to set for many players compared to recent offerings, it did introduce The Gitrog, Ravenous Ride.
This five-cost Legendary Frog Horror Mount (a rare sight in the game) is a prime example of the Golgari (black-green) surge linked to Dina, Essence Brewer from Secrets of Strixhaven.
Reimagining a classic from Shadows Over Innistrad, The Gitrog is a 6/5 creature with trample and haste. When it inflicts combat damage to a player, its controller can choose to sacrifice a creature that’s equipped to it (this is optional, not a requirement). If they do, they draw cards equal to the sacrificed creature’s power and can put that many land cards onto the battlefield tapped. This makes it a fantastic addition to any Golgari deck focused on sacrifice, especially with Dina in play, as it amplifies card draw and overall value.
Utilizing Dina’s second ability allows you to sacrifice a creature, place +1/+1 counters on another creature, attach that creature to The Gitrog, and then have The Gitrog sacrifice it for a massive card draw and land ramp.
The ability to quickly ramp up and maintain a formidable creature on the battlefield is an enticing prospect. Just a few weeks ago, The Gitrog, Ravenous Ride was valued at under a dollar, but it has since surged to around $3.50 in market value, with sales nearly double that.
Is this combo catching your interest? It serves as a useful sacrifice outlet if Dina gets taken out, and it could also help you manage her commander tax more efficiently.
