Supermassive Games has faced a tough few years from a fan’s perspective, but the upcoming release of their latest entry in the Dark Pictures Anthology marks a potential turning point. After a delay from its original October 2025 launch, this horror multiplayer experience is set to release on May 12, and it could signal a brighter future for the studio.

The past has been challenging for Supermassive. In 2024, their collaboration with Dead by Daylight, The Casting of Frank Stone, didn’t meet expectations, and the studio reportedly cut around 90 positions in a significant round of layoffs. The struggles continued into 2025, with the delay of Directive 8020—another interactive drama wrapped in a sci-fi horror theme reminiscent of The Thing—and further layoffs affecting 36 jobs, alongside a lukewarm reception for Little Nightmares 3, which we reviewed with a three-out-of-five rating.

However, I’m hopeful that Directive 8020 will revitalize Supermassive and its fading Dark Pictures Anthology, bringing back the chilling success that Until Dawn achieved a decade ago.

“Supermassive Games is excited to announce that Directive 8020, a sci-fi survival horror narrative adventure, will launch on May 12, 2026,” according to a press release. The game promises “paranoia-fueled decision-making where trust is fragile and every choice can be deadly.” Players will face the challenge of identifying which crew members on their spaceship are human and trustworthy, while a new rewind feature called “Turning Points” will remind players that safety isn’t always clear-cut.

“Directive 8020 will be available for single-player and up to 5-player couch co-op on May 12, with online multiplayer coming in a free post-launch update,” the press release states. “Stay tuned for more details soon.”
