Unveiling Marvel’s X-Men: Insights into the Upcoming Mutant Era in the MCU
More than 25 years after the X-Men first transformed the superhero film landscape, Marvel Studios is gearing up to reboot the franchise with a fresh X-Men movie. Initially hinted at in 2019 by the studio’s head, this new iteration promises a new cast and the chance to inject some fresh (mutant) energy into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
As with many of Marvel’s upcoming projects, details are being kept under wraps, but excitement for the next phase of the MCU is building, and Marvel is bound to share more soon.
Here’s what we know about the future of Marvel Studios’ X-Men.
The iconic cast from the Fox-era X-Men films is still active, with Hugh Jackman reprising his role in 2024’s Deadpool vs. Wolverine, and familiar faces like Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen set to appear in 2026’s Avengers: Doomsday, possibly for their last hurrah—unless they make it to 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars.
However, Kevin Feige has confirmed that a completely new team of X-Men is on the horizon. He described this reboot as a “youth-focused” endeavor, indicating that the casting will reflect a younger demographic and that this will influence the film’s tone and perspective.
Director Jake Schreier has also shared insights into the reboot’s thematic direction, emphasizing that the essence of X-Men lies in its complexity and internal conflicts. He noted that the characters grapple with their identities and roles in society, which provides rich material for storytelling.
This focus on younger characters opens the door for fresh narratives within the MCU, especially since younger heroes have primarily been featured in series like Hawkeye, Ms. Marvel, and Ironheart.
Expect a younger cast compared to the original X-Men film, as Marvel Studios aims to introduce a new generation of actors to lead the next phase of the MCU. One potential candidate may already be familiar to fans: Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel.
Ms. Marvel’s Disney Plus series hinted at her mutant heritage back in 2022, and a year later, she officially joined the X-Men in the comics.
While no official casting announcements have been made for the new X-Men film, there are strong rumors surrounding Sadie Sink (from Stranger Things) potentially playing Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Jean Grey, known as Marvel Girl and Phoenix, has been portrayed by Famke Janssen and Sophie Turner in previous films. Introducing her through Spider-Man would be a bold move for Marvel, reminiscent of how they introduced a new Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War.
Filming is expected to kick off in 2026 or early 2027, so casting news for Marvel Studios’ new X-Men should be coming soon.
In addition to director Jake Schreier, who has experience with Marvel’s Thunderbolts and other projects, Michael Lesslie has been brought on to write the screenplay. Lesslie has a solid background in adapting popular franchises, with credits including The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes and Assassin’s Creed.
Beyond the writer and director, Marvel has yet to reveal much about the rest of the film’s team. Updates on roles like cinematographer, composer, and costume designer will be crucial in shaping the new X-Men’s tone.
As for the full cast, that might not be unveiled until at least 2028. Currently, Disney and Marvel Studios have only two films scheduled for 2026 and 2027: Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
Looking further ahead, Disney has reserved four dates for untitled Marvel Studios films in 2028, and X-Men could very well be among them. Reports suggest that the May date is earmarked for X-Men, with additional projects like Fantastic Four and Black Panther sequels potentially landing in the same year.
